"Anak-anak yang berusia dibawah 6 tahun itu tidak membeli sendiri, tetapi mereka menemukannya di dalam kulkas yang ditinggalkan orangtuanya atau saudaranya yang usianya lebih tua," ucap Profesor Dr Steven Lipshultz, MD, dokter spesialis anak di Children's Hospital of Mechigan kepada Fox News, dikutip pada Selasa (18/11/2014).
Sebanyak 57% kasus melibatkan efek samping kardiovaskular (penyakit jantung), sementara sebanyak 55% kasus berkaitan dengan gejala neurologi. Dalam kasus pada anak, efek samping yang paling parah termasuk kejang, irama jantung tidak teratur, tekanan darah tinggi atau hipertensi.
"Minuman berenergi tidak baik dikonsumsi untuk anak sehingga penggunaannya harus dikonsultasikan kepada ahli medis," lanjut Profesor Lipshultz.
Minuman berenergi cenderung memiliki kandungan gula yang tinggi dan bahan-bahan yang mampu meningkatkan energi seperti kafein, gingseng, taurin, dan I-cartini. Penelitian ini telah terbit di American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2014 di Chicago.
